Microlocs, Sisterlocks, or Traditional Locs: How to Choose Before You Book
This decision is bigger than it looks
Most people choose a loc size based on a photo they liked. Then they spend the next three years living with the maintenance schedule and the cost that came with it.
The install is one day. What you are really choosing is how often you sit in a chair, for how long, and at what price, for years. Worth thirty minutes of thought first.
Traditional locs
The most common size, typically somewhere between 60 and 200 locs on a full head. Started by comb coil, two-strand twist, or interlocking.
Maintenance is the lightest of the three. A retwist typically runs two to three hours, at a DFW median around $112. Most people go every four to six weeks.
Traditional locs give you the most styling versatility and the fastest appointments. They are thicker, so the overall look is bolder and the loc count is lower.
If you want locs without reorganizing your calendar around them, this is usually the answer.
Microlocs
Much smaller and far more numerous, often 250 to 450 locs or more. Usually maintained by interlocking rather than palm rolling.
The appeal is real. Microlocs give you dramatically more styling freedom, a finer and more versatile look, and they can be worn down in ways thicker locs cannot. They also distribute weight differently, which some people find more comfortable.
The commitment is also real. Installation is a long appointment, sometimes spread across multiple days, and runs around $512 at the DFW median with a range up to $1,500 depending on loc count and length. Maintenance runs around $188 and takes several hours, because every one of those several hundred locs has to be handled individually.
Be honest with yourself about the maintenance before you commit. Microlocs that go too long between retie appointments are harder to recover than traditional locs that do.
Sisterlocks
Sisterlocks is not a size. It is a specific trademarked system with a proprietary technique, specific tools, and a formal certification process for the consultants who perform it.
That distinction matters practically. Only a certified Sisterlocks consultant can offer actual Sisterlocks. A salon offering very small interlocked locs is offering microlocs, which may look similar but is a different service by a different method.
Neither is better. They are different things, and you should know which one you are buying. If having the certified system specifically matters to you, verify the consultant's certification directly.
Pricing reflects the credential. DFW median for Sisterlocks installation sits around $1,000, roughly double a microloc install. Maintenance, interestingly, lands at about the same place as microloc maintenance.
The question most people skip
Not which looks best. This one: what does this cost me over three years?
Traditional locs at a $112 retwist every five weeks runs somewhere around $1,100 a year. Microlocs at a $188 retie on the same schedule runs closer to $1,900. Over three years, that difference is roughly $2,400 before you count the higher install.
That is not an argument against microlocs. It is an argument for choosing them on purpose rather than by accident.
The other question: time
Microloc maintenance appointments run several hours. If your schedule cannot absorb a half day every five or six weeks, that is a genuine constraint, and it is better to know it now than to discover it in month eight when your roots need attention and you cannot find the time.
People do not usually abandon microlocs because they stopped liking them. They abandon them because the maintenance stopped fitting their life.
A few things that are true of all three
Tension matters more than style. Locs installed or maintained too tightly cause real damage over time, particularly at the hairline. If an appointment hurts, say so during it, not after.
Product buildup is the quiet enemy, especially wax and heavy petroleum-based products. Buildup is much easier to avoid than to remove.
The awkward phase is normal and temporary. Every loc journey goes through a stage where things look frizzy and uneven. A lot of people comb out during that phase and regret it. It passes.
